A gorgeous spray tan is a partnership.
The solution and application matter, but what you do before your appointment has a major impact on how evenly your tan develops, how natural it looks, and how beautifully it fades.
So before your next Artistry by Jen spray tan, here’s how to prepare.
24–48 Hours Before: Exfoliate
This is one of the most important steps.
Spray tan solution develops on the outermost layer of your skin. Areas with excess dry or dead skin can grab more solution, which may create darker or uneven patches.
Gently exfoliate your body before your appointment, paying particular attention to areas that tend to be drier, including:
- Elbows
- Knees
- Ankles
- Feet
- Hands
The goal is smooth skin—not irritated skin—so aggressive scrubbing isn’t necessary.
If shaving or other hair removal is part of your routine, doing it ahead of your appointment also gives your skin time to settle.
The Day of Your Appointment
Come to your appointment with clean, dry skin whenever possible.
Avoid applying products that can create a barrier between your skin and the tanning solution, including heavy lotions, body oils, and similar products.
Your skin does not need to feel stripped or uncomfortable. We simply want to avoid anything that could interfere with even application and development.
Think About What You’re Wearing
After your tan, loose clothing is your friend.
Choose comfortable, loose-fitting pieces and avoid anything unnecessarily tight that could rub against the freshly applied solution.
Dark clothing is also a practical choice immediately after a spray tan.
And yes—think about shoes too. Tight straps can create friction against developing color.
What Happens at Your Appointment?
If this is your first spray tan, don’t worry. I’ll walk you through the process.
We can discuss the depth of color you’re looking for and the occasion you’re tanning for so we can create a result that makes sense for you.
My goal is never for someone to look obviously “spray tanned.”
I want you to look like you—with gorgeous, even, sun-kissed color.
After Your Spray Tan
Once your spray tan has been applied, your biggest job is allowing it to develop properly.
During your recommended development period, avoid activities that expose the skin to unnecessary water, sweating, or friction. I’ll give you instructions based on the service and solution used for your appointment.
After your initial rinse, maintaining hydrated skin can help your tan fade more evenly.
And remember: spray tans are temporary by design.
Our skin naturally sheds, so gradual fading is normal.
Bridal and Special-Event Spray Tans
If you are tanning for a wedding or another major event, timing matters.
Whenever possible, I recommend planning ahead rather than scheduling your very first spray tan immediately before an important occasion. A trial tan can be especially helpful for brides who want to see the color on their own skin before deciding what they prefer for the wedding.
Spray tanning can also be a beautiful addition to your overall bridal beauty plan because your makeup, complexion, dress, and body color are all being seen together in photographs.
Preparation is what helps all of those pieces work together.
Your Spray Tan Prep Checklist
Before your appointment: exfoliate, complete hair removal ahead of time, and arrive with clean skin free from heavy body products.
After your appointment: wear loose clothing, follow your development instructions, avoid unnecessary moisture and friction, and keep your skin hydrated once your tan has developed.
A little preparation makes a very big difference.
